[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Apr-02 AT 11:34 AM (EST)]I have a 99 ford ranger xlt with a 3.0 v6. I had to replace the battery and alternator a couple of days ago and i can't drive more than 10 miles before the battery gage drops like a rock and the car dies. I have replaced the battery cables and that did nothing. I'm out of ideas and i need help and some ideas.
Well, we got my roomates running. unfortunatly it probably isn't the same problem.
The previous owner had installed a starter kill security system, but they had hooked it up wrong so instead of killing the starter it shutoff the alternator. when they traded(or repoed it) they did not get the security chip at the dealer. so after $200 of other parts and two days we finally found the damn thing ( and relised what it did ). its now running fine.
a couple of things for you to check too . the fuses there is a starter and ignition fuse that we blew which will kill the alternator, it is located in the interior fuse box. 2) check the wires runing from the alternator to the starter relay. check the battery ground , it is hooked up to 3 spots(frame, block, body panel) check the positive wire from the battery to the starter. We replaced the ground and positive wires from the battery, they were REALLY corroded. if you need anything else email me at Lanxas@***REMOVETHIS***hotmail.com (and dont forget to remove teh antispam part)
also get a haynes or chilton manual for your truck, or check your local public library for it. They seem to carry a few of them or can order them from another library.
