Adding Tachometer in '93 Ranger

Hello,

I recently purchased a '93 Ranger Super Cab with the 4.0L engine. My truck does not have the factory tach, and is 2 wheel drive. There is a non-functional panel (where the 4x4 button would be located) that I was thinking of adding an aftermarket tachometer.

Has anyone done this, or is there possibly a kit to do something like this?

Thanks for any information.

Adding Tachometer in '93 Ranger

Hey. I installed one on my 98 Ranger 4cyl. I paid $34.99 for it. It's a sun pro 2". It was very simple to install. I don't know how you would install it on a 93 though. My truck has a distributor-less ignition, so I had to hook it up to the stock tach wire. You might have to tie it into your distributor depending on what engine you have. You know better then me. They all come with manuals, so you won't be left in the dark. I then attached he gage to my steering column, and it has made me VERY happy. It's amazing how much you miss having a tach when you don't have one. Good luck. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I got a pretty good idea what I'm doing. -Kevin

Yeah, the '93 is also a DIS so its just a matter of hooking up a wire to the ignition, one to the light switch, and one to the tach wire. As Kevin stated, they do come with a set of instructions, although, they never are really detailed as to how to run the wires through your truck or anything cause its pretty much up to the owner how they want it. I mounted a 2 3/4" one from AutoMeter (about $90, brand names, go figure) with forward mount instead of rearward mount. Under the hood, infront of the driver seat on inside of firewall would be a power distribution box. You'll find fuses and a few sets of wires coming out the side of it. Kevin might remember better than I do about which one the tach wire was but its in that area, or should be anyways. Hope this helps and wish you luck.

Thanks for the responses.

What I ended up doing was getting a stock instrument cluster from a '93 Explorer which had a tachometer. I swapped speedometer heads from the Explorer cluster and my Ranger cluster and now have the factory tach. All in all, I am very pleased with the install, and happy to now have the tachometer. I did see a website from a guy that installed a tach in the 4x4 control area for anyone interested in that route....
