Oil leak!

I changed my oil yesterday, and when I was putting the old oil into the gallon jugs the new stuff came in, I only had twelve quarts. I'm no master of lower math, but I figured that I was two quarts short, so I did some looking around, and sure enough I found a lot of oil on the underside of the bellhousing area/inspection cover. There isn't a lot of oil blown back, so I thought it might be coming from above. I did a search on the subject and found a few topics that gave me some ideas about where it could be coming from, so I looked again and here's what I found:

1. Lots of oil as described above
2. A spot of oil under the turbo, but nothing that has dripped over the back.
3. I can't feel any "fresh" oil on the back of the block

I haven't pull the plastic cover of the top of the engine yet, but I also don't know where the plugs (with the o-rings) are, but at this point, I'm pretty convinced the rear seal is leaking. Any suggestions or insight? After pulling the tranny off of my Bronco 4 times in the last year, I'm not looking forward to doing it all over again. One last thing: does the PSD have a one piece rear seal, or am I looking at a BIG project (ie two piece seal)?

Thanks in advance, you guys are a great bunch with a lot of know-how!

Oil Leak

I also had an oil leak that ultimately showed up on the oil pan. I couldn't find it so I took it to the Ford truck dealer and they said that the front cover was cracked and that it was the first one they've seen. Luckily it is under warranty still but it only has 61k miles. It is a major undertaking and they said they will have it at least week. From what my repair manula says they have to remove the engine, water pump, oil pump etc. to get it off. I hope yours isn't the same. Good Luck.

could be your oil galley plugs which are at the back of the head. there known for leaking, or could be the turbo pedistal leaking. is there oil in the engine valley? the oil galley plugs are about 1" big and 3/8 square drive. you can see them with a inspection mirror. if thats whats leaking a 3/8" snap on flex head long handled rachect is the trick to getting thoose beast out. there locktited in so heat the plug up a little with a propane torch and break it loose and work it back and forth before you bring it all the way out if you just muscle it out it can damage the threads.

Like barebackjake said, probably oil galley plugs. Not sure what year your PSD is, but mine is a 97. 1/2" square drive fits the ones on mine. Had to buy the plugs from the stealership $31 ea, and had to finally have them get the darned things out... heat, flex head ratchets, nothing I did got them loose.
Good luck
