I jsut bought a 1994 B2300 with oh about 113k on it for $1200, has a 5 speed any known problems with these truck OTHER than it doesn't ahve Power sterrring.?
i dont know much about the b series but if the tranny is the same mazda tranny as the ranger has, then the three shift rail plugs on the top will eventually leak if they havent already. also lacks power.
The 2.3L SOHC engine is pretty reliable as long as it is maintained properly. I've driven two vehicles with this engine, an 1981 Mustang and my current 95 Ranger. No, it isn't the most powerful truck in the world, but it is a solid and smooth running engine and is close to being indestructable. It is a non-interference design, so even if the timing belt should happen to break, you won't have to worry about putting holes through pistons or bending valves, the worst thing that will happen is you'll need a tow to a shop or home. With that kind of mileage, you probably should change the timing belt unless the previous owner had done it recently.
123SVT: The 2.3's are very durable. Keep up on the maintenance and your troubles should be few. Dont have to worry about leaky power steering pump. They have a tendency to "ping" and correcting the situation can sometimes be a thorn in ones side.
Like Grease Monkey mentioned, changing the spark plugs and wires is tedious and time consuming - not impossible. Use the double-platinum Motorcraft/Autolite plugs and keep the MAF sensor clean. Some of our Rangers have over 200k and I can not justify replacing them yet.
