I have a 2000 4X2 Excursion - that shimmies at about 55-65. Is there a damper available to stop this? The front end has been aligned and the wheel balanced and it still does it.
What kind of alignment place did you take it to? I take mine to a local place where they specialize in 18 wheelers and motor homes... the equipment they use is much larger and seems to work a lot better on these big trucks as the stuff at normal alignment places. The people also seem to know what they are doing a lot more. Also describe your problem in detail.. even take them for a ride.. then make sure they have fixed it as you leave...
...a steering stabilizer can help, and they are available.. but remember that the stabilizer is only going to be hiding the real problem that your truck has.
I as well as many others replaced the factory steering stablizer with an after market version. I put on a Rancho (I think it was an RS5410 part number) on my 2002 4X4 model X and it helped quite a bit. I really don't notice the loose feeling anymore. I also think the BFG All Terrain TA KO's helped with their heavy sidewalls. They seem to be more square than most tires and help track better. I am definately happy with the results of these changes to improve this problem.
Ford sells a 4X2 damper for 70 bucks for the whole kit and it works wonders. Every aftermarket unit that I have seen was more than that for the shock alone.
FYI....I got my rancho stabilizer from JCWhitney with the 10 or 15% discount on the magazine they send out when I called them. I think I paid somewhere around $50 or dollars for the stabilizer. I had to call them since the online list of models and the magazine did not include the Excursion listing, but they were able to cross reference and get the right one. It bolted right in place with no mods.
