My son has a 01 ranger 4x4 with 4.0 115000 miles ---trouble codes are 0171 and 0174 and then 0733 does anyone know what to look for ? thanks in advance
The 0171 is lean back 1 and 0174 is lean bank 2, I would start by looking for vacuum leaks and cleaning the MAF, there are instructions for this in the tech info thread at the top of the forum. I don't have a code 0733 listed for a Ranger.
thanks to all the resonses. thought i would keep you posted on the lean on bank 1&2 seemly turned out to be a black rubber 90 deg elbow at the front on the engine . cleared the codes and so far they haven't returned while i'm here i still have a problem with 92 2.3 pinging at cruise speed IF the octane spout is in . remove it and the ping stops , but a loss of power i have decarboned , changed to a colder plug replaced egr evr egr position sensor
ect anyone ever had this problem before and know the fix ? 5sp manual 158000 miles thanks
Some of the 2.3's just ping - period end of story. One thing comes to mind that has occasionally been a problem: when you worked on your EGR valve, did you completely clean the port that goes through the intake manifold from where the valve mounts at the back clear through to the intake side? Those sometimes get carboned up and therefore restrict the flow. This can cause the combustion to be too hot - which is why I assume you went to colder plugs.
happy holidays to everyone thanks R. R. yeah i cleaned the egr ports but here is what i am trying now . i work at a metal shop so i took a piece of stainless steel and made a plate to match the egr valve but a much smaller hole trying to reduce the amount of exhaust going into the engine . i haven't driven much to see what will happen but so far it is working .i will keep the post updated to let everyone know thanks
Well, the block off plate with smaller holes did not work so I pulled the octane spout again . I have unplugged the egr vaccum and this seems to stop the pinging but turns on the cel . From what I have seen on these forums it looks like a lean mixture of fuel ---any ideas ?---- fuel pressure is from 22-29
eg rred: Test your oxygen sensor(s). There is a thread in this site that tells how to do it with a multimeter. This test will tell you if they are working or not - only the real-time test will tell you if they are slow.
I decided to experiment a little so I replaced the newest egr valve with the old original one that came on the truck . What I found out was that it pinged even more than the new one. So I assume the spring is weak . My question is what determines the amount of egr opening and is there a way to adjust it? As I haved posted before it only pings at cruise speed ( 50 -55) with the octane spout in . If I remove the octane spout OR remove the egr vaccum line to disengage the egr the ping goes away. Thanks for any info. in advance and this is a great site .
