Cheap shipping for wheels

Hey!

I'm researching shipping options to send a set of wheels accross country.

I'd love to hear some advice from anyone whose done this.

What would a set of 16" alloy wheels weigh, anyway? 30 lb. each?

I'm not all that interested in freight carrier shipping that will involve more hassle on either end than the standard UPS/Fedex/USPS type stuff, though I've heard that Grayhoud actually does carry freight for reasonable rates.

I have an estimate from the USPS that puts us conservatively in the $110 ball park. Most eBay sellers are asking for $80-$90 to ship four, so it would be cool to save $10 or $20 if I could -- not that big a deal if I can't.

Many thanks for your thoughts!

Hmmm... Greyhound wants $38 each to ship them. So much for "rediculously low" freight rates. I guessed 40 lbs. each and had to ship them individually.

Consolidating the package into two boxes of two wheels each drops the price to $60 a box.

That's more like it, but USPS is still winning at $110.

Food for thought.

Hard to beat UPS for stuff like that. FedEx might be more comparable now, used to be quite a bit higher for heavy stuff. However, make sure you pack them well. I've had good luck shipping computers and stuff with all of them, but know some folks who've shipped aluminum or mag wheels, and they looked like they'd been handled with bulldozers. Insurance seems to be a wise option.

i was shipping some brake parts ( around 85 lbs) and UPS wanted something like 100 bucks ugh... it was two smaller boxs in one big box, so i spilt them up and sent them on USPS (they have 70lb limit, thats why i had to split them) for around 45 total. not bad, but make sure you get insurance too.

I shipped 6 early 60's 19.5 inch Ford rims, 5 had tires to a fellow in Minnesota (from Oregon) through Reddaway freight, it was $240.
