Despite all promises nobody has been able to provide me with a iPod connector, not even a simple line-in. So, I went ahead and made an appointment to get an Alpine headunit plus iPod controller installed. Does anyone have any experience with nice looking faceplates for the hole in my dashboard?
Also, in no way would I have pursued this for sound quality issues. I have the audiophile components and I have to smile at people that get the headunit or speakers replaced because of sound quality issues. I've owned cars across the range with audio installs in varying price categories (and I mean varying in both directions) and I've come to the conclusion that the audiophile set-up is just fine. The ONLY reason I am replacing the headunit is because Ford, their suppliers (yes, rambuunctious, you too made false promises), and the aftermarket vendors are unable to come up with a simple solution, ANY solution.
I'd prefer to keep my stock equipment but Alpine, here I come.
I too feel your pain. I've waited and waited, but no solutions yet. You would think that in this day and age, with all the modern electronics, an input would be very simple. My guess is that Ford holds some kind of patent on the input protocol or "key" needed to communicate with the radio, and they are unwilling to release the "spec's". I own an iPod but an RCA input option would be great as anyone could hook almost anything to the radio, not just an iPod.
I am also considering going with an aftermarket radio. I will / would miss the audiophile sound. Everyone that rides in my truck say they love the way the stereo sounds and wish that their's sounded as good.
Hey do you think you can take a pic of the alpine unit in your truck and email it to me.....I really want to do something but I'm afraid about how it is going to look...I want to hook my ipod straight in.....do you notice a big diff...from the fm modulator? I appreciate it.
Hey Josh, it's just a box and you can hide it somewhere in the dash, their's enough room. FM Modulators sound bad, I had one and returned it the next day and just got a Pioneer stereo with AUX inputs. I took the cigerette lighter plug and drop it inside the dash, connected the iPod car adapter to it and then to the AUX inputs. Only have 1 cable coming out from below. It sounds NICE, even with the stock speakers. Anyway, I know that wasn't really what you were asking so here's a link.
Hey thanks!!! I really would like to see some pics of your pioneer insalled in your truck.....I really want to get something, but I like the flush look of the stock radio. So I'd like to see anybody's aftermarket radio in thier 04 F150!!

I use a DLO TransPod FM Transmitter - it works for me
Check out the link below.
With this product, you plug it into the lighter, insert you IPOD, pick an empty station (any station, .1 increments) and hear the IPOD through your factory radio. It cost about $100 and can be moved from car to car. Because it is a FM modulator, it may not work well in a crowded market (no free fm stations). I use it in Nashville TN and it does everything I need it to. Now you can buy it at BestBuy (so if it does not work, you can take it back.)
Ya, but I painted it black so you don't notice it anymore. I wanted a quick and dirty setup to hold the XM, yet make it easy to remove as it spends it's days in my office at work. I also wanted to be able to use the rest of the storage pocket for stuff.

FM mods generally suck. inline is the only way to go if you want decent quality. If you're listening to talk radio the I suppose they're fine...otherwise they are the least quality way to listen to this stuff.
