I have had my truck for almost a year and a half. It is a '00 f150 4X2 with the 5.4 V8. During the 15000 miles I put on it I was getting 16-17 mpg on the highway and 15 with mix city/highway. These last few months however my mileage has just been getting worse and worse. I am at about 13.5 during a recent highway trip going 75 mph. I replaced the air filter and the tire pressure is good. The replacing of the air filter did not seem to have any effect. I called ford and they suggested an 80$ diagnostic which may not show anything. The ride feels smooth and I have not noticed any other problems just a decrease in mpg. I baby the truck to milk the best mpg so this is very frustrating. Does anyone have any suggestions. Jiffy lube keeps pestering me to change the fuel filter since I hit 43000 miles. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I would prefer to keep it out of the dealership since they rip you off. Thanks guys

Has the MAF sensor ever been cleaned? It's easy to do and sometimes helps.
Something is overlooked quite often is the thermostat. If the engine doesn't get up to normal operating temperature it can hurt the gas mileage quite a bit. The best way to check for that is to hook up a scan tool and watch the coolant temperature on that.
Lots of scan tools don't have that capability but the ones your dealer uses do.

Scott,
I also own a '00 F-150, when I bought the truck this past summer I was only getting 12-13 mpg over my first five fill-ups. I decided to change the fuel filter with info I found here, and now average between 15-16 mpg. The fuel filter change is an easy DIY job, you'll need just one special (line disconnect) tool (I used the cheap 5/16" plastic one, and it worked just fine).
thanks for the tips guys I will check both of them out and see if it helps matters. I appreciate the quick responses!! If you have any other ideas go ahead and post but I work on next week when I get some free time.
