I have a 99 ranger super cab and want to move my subs from the old car into it. I have 2 10" subs and want to put them in the back. I was hoping to squezze them into a small box that would fit under the jump seats. Does the size or more importantly the shape matter? The subs are recomended in a 1.4 cu foot ported inclosure i won't get that under the seat. what would happen if I made the box not as tall but made it reall long so that the whole box takes up the length of the cab but is no higher than the bottom of the jump seats? will this give me enough volume to get decent sound, or is the shape to odd to allow the speaker to flex properly.
You can usually fudge in the cu/ft area by 10-30% in either direction. With a smaller box you won't be getting quite as low of a frequency response. You definitely won't be able to port the box, not with the limited volume you are shooting for.
thanks maticuno. I'll give it a whirl and let you all know how it turns out. I did a rough measurment last night and i think the box will be 14" wide 6" tall and 48" long By my rough estimates that's about 2.3 cu/feet. which should be sufficent for the subs (they need 1.4 cu/feet each) I will start building tonight and let you know how it turns out. I do perfer the sound on a ported box but i guess with that space I'll be happy with what i get.
You have to take into account the thickness of the wood... If you were to use 1/2" (I wouldn't use anything smaller) MDF it would have a volume of 1.76...
good point mattpattburg. plus i have to take in the space the speaker takes as well. Man it's getting down there. I might have to play with things a bit and see if i can get a little more volume somewhere.
With smaller space the only thing you are going to lose is some dB. And in a small cab like a Ranger, you aren't going to need a whole heck of a lot of sound to be good. I'm running one 10" in a custom box that is just slightly under the cu/ft recommended. I have it running at about 200W RMS and it moves so much air in my tiny single cab Ranger that it compresses the air in the cab and starts to dampen the cone movement. For the best sound I have to keep the passenger window rolled down so it can vent the moving air.
ok It fits!!!!! I finnaly got around to building a box last night took about 4 hours to measure and fit everything but i got it. The jump seats cover most of the speakers (i wanted to hide them from view as best as possible) Plus the bonus is I'm right on the money for the cu/feet needed (with a sealed box) Tomorrow I'll put in the new HU and amps plus I want to fit the stock 6x8 (or what ever they are with 3 way 6x9's that I have. hopefully all goes well. I'll post pics of the box and set up when i get it all finnished. I f anyone wants the dimensions for the box let me know and I'll send them over. It fits tight but the front seats can still go all the way back and the jump seats are still usable.
