Electrical problem

Hi,
I'm new here and a just bought a 71 F100 last week. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the following?
The electrical system has been hacked up over the years and the brake lights/tail lights/blinkers are the big issue. Right now the turn signals are working, lighting up the inner filament. The running lights are working, lighting up the other filament. Only one brake light is working lighting up the same filament as the blinker, is this right? When I got the truck the brake lights didn't work at all and if you put on the right blinker nothing happened, left blinker made both sides blink! So I've made headway but I'm not sure if I have it wired correctly so far.
Bulbs have been checked and swapped.

By the way, great website!

Thanks
Rob

I have a 72 and had intermittent problems with all that same stuff. All of them items run through the turn signal switch. I replaced that and all is good now. There have been quite a few folks say the same thing in these forums.

Check your brake light switch, located up near the top of your brake pedal inside the cab, and see if the wires on it are intact, and that the switch is functioning properly. Also, check the grounds at the tail light assembly as well. On my old 69 I ended up having to run seperate ground wires, as the sockets(which provide the ground) had corroded to the point where there was no ground anymore. If you can twist the sockets a bit either way, with the assembly removed, you may free up enough fresh metal to attain a new ground surface.

EDIT: I should add, look for and remove, any and all crimp style connecters, and replace with solder and shrink tube to avoid possible bad connections. Crimp style connecters work fine for an "it'll get you home" fix, but have a habit of loosening inside to where they look like they're connected, but really are not.

I think the steering column has been replaced as there is a hazard switch on it as well on the dash, so the wiring there has a bunch of connectors so it will connet to the wiring harness. So I'm not sure what's right there.

The brake switch definitly works, but that is all hacked up too, so I don't know if they got it hooked up to the correct wires afterwards.

I odered a factory manual from Motorhaven with a wiring harness diagram, so hopefully that will help.

Thanks for all advice!
