my 2001 exployer just will not stay idling in morning below 45. my wife needs to keep the idle up high til her boy gets warm, then it run great the rest of the day.had this problem last year, but run out of cold morning. i've changed plugs-wires, iac, pcv, tps, egr. maybe it needs to be put in the garage, rapped in a blanket. any suggestion?
I had (have) a similar problem with my 91 EXP and it seems to be the IAC. Check other posts on FTE and you'll see a common theme with the IAC. I actually have two IAC units that I clean and rotate every Spring/Fall. It may sound ridiculous but after enduring the same issue over and over it seems to work for me.
I have a 2001 Explorer Sport with the same problem and I also had the IAC replaced last year. Guess what, as soon as the weather cooled down it started happening again. I don't know if this is correct but there is(?) a service bulletin or whatever they call it which advises the Ford dealers to change the faulty MAF sensor gasket, disconnect the battery and reset the computer. As I said I don't know if this will solve anything at all. Maybe someone else can clear this up for you and me.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I also have the "door ajar" problem. Tried WD-40 last night and opened and closed the doors and rear hatch until my neighbor came out to see what the hell was going on. Will try again tonight.
I have a 98 Explorer Sport with the same problem. I have changed the iac, egr, tps, plugs, and wires. It still has the same problem. I have read somewhere or was told that it could be the fuel pressure regulator. I don't know if it is true, for one I don't know where it is.
i did pull codes last winter, an came back as oxygen sensor,s. i changed both. they said without engine lite on, thy can not pull any codes. i put the old iac valve on tonite seeing if the may have sold me a faulty iac.
A common problem on a 4.0 SOHC is bad intake manifold O-rings. When they are bad they cause a vacuum leak which can lead to stalling, rough idle, O2 codes etc. The problem is usually worst when the engine is cold.
my 98xlt (4.0 sohc) ran bad on cold weather startups. the recall m12 fix solved my problems. I'll verify the recall number again tomorrow, I'm going from memory. two years later I needed to change out the IAC for idle problems in WARM weather.
Thanks guys! The WD-40 did work. I didn't have to spray a second time, I just opened and closed the door a couple of times and the lights went out.
Btw, I also have that rattle in the morning. I was told it was the timing belt but the reason for it was that either the gasket for the MAF sensor was leaking or the O2 sensors needed to be replace and the computer takes it's time decided how the car is going to run. That's why the sound goes away eventually.
Oh yeah, my wife called me this morning and said the "service engine light" came on. Sounds like last year. My mechanic couldn't quite figure out the codes and said it looks like both O2 sensors. When I spoke to a Ford mechanic he said it's highly unusual that both would go at the same time.
