Question 96 explorer steering wheel lamps?

I have a 96 Explorer and the lights on the left side of the steering wheel for the cruise control on/off switches no longer illuminate, however the lights on the right side of the set/coast/resume switches still function properly.

I was wondering if they are some sort of fiiber optic. I cant find any information in my service/repair manual. Does anyone have any ideas how to replace them?

I believe there is a board behind the control pads that needs to be replaced. easy to get to...tough to put back on.

Skirydr, Thanks for the info.

Do I have to remove the airbag? Do you know of any manuals that might outline or describe the procedure?

i had to change mine too, there are two bolts on either side of the steering wheel base, I first unplugged the battery, then removed the two bolts on the side and the airbag came out ok, you just have to be very careful when messing with them, ive heard theyre very tempermental. after you get it off its pretty obvious what needs to be unscrewed. hope this helps. -tony

Th air bag must be removed. You don't really have to disconnect the battery, just make sure the ignition is off.

I have just changed mine.
1. Disconnect the battery negative
2. Remove the two caps on the left and right side of the steering wheel to access air bag screws.
3. Remove the air bag screws.... may be quite snug.
4. Carefully lift up the air bag and disconnect the wire to it. Set it down on your workbench with the pad side up.
5. Remove the two screws holding the switch on.
6. Disconnect the switch wire and remove the switch.
Reverse to install...... the air bag screws are torqued.... I forget the torque but something like 14-18 inch lbs I think.
