Headers, intake spacers, K&N and a chip. Get the heads ported and polished if your gettin into it. If your really gettin into it you could do hundreds of things, like bore out the cylinders, balance the crank, high compression pistons, aftermarket heads, and a lumpy roller cam to mention a few.

engine rebuild

I'm in the same situation, I have a 90 ranger 4x4 4.0L I was looking to rebild with the use of performance parts. I've been to a couple of engine building shops and what I got from them is if you mess with the inner parts of the engine(custom cam, pistons, push rods ect.) your engine will run funky because the motor is computer controlled. Your computer is programmed for that specific motor. Your best bet is to go for a ballenced rebuilt motor and then get aftermarket parts. Thats probably what I am going to do.

Aftermarket parts list:
Chip
Exhaust
Larger Throttle body
Open air induction kit
Changing gears(rearend)

Thats all I can think of now.

Good luck!
