a boom on startup

On almost every cold start my truck makes a deep *boom*. I thought it might be blowing a pack rat out the tailpipe, but I looked and that's not it. (Someday I may bore I mean amuse you with packrat tales, the little buggers drive me nuts.) Do diesel engines backfire? It sounds like it's coming from under the hood on the passenger side, but you know how tricky sounds can be. It starts up, runs for a few seconds, then one boom.

Any notions what it might be, or if it's something I need to pay attention to? It only does it on cold starts. It starts and runs just fine.

It's the vent blend door. Make sure you have the fan off when you start the truck and this will go away. Check the Super Duty/Heavy Duty Forum FAQ for more information.
