I have an 1993 Ford Diesel. Every once in a while it tends start then die right away. I have found air in the fuel injectors under this condition. Where would the injector pump be picking up air in the fuel. This only happens when the truck has been setting for a day or two.
The o-rings under the little plastic return caps on the injectors. To test it, use a small hose pinch plier or vise grip to pinch the small 1/4 inch air bleed line that comes off the fuel filter and goes down to the injectors. Let it sit and try it the next day, it should fire up normal.
Thanks! I will try that. I am new at this forum and noticed that there were several other related problems/corrections that I could look into after I had already sent my thread. This web sight is full of great idea's. I'll keep you posted as the results.

This is the exact same thing my truck is doing except mine doesn't necessarily have to sit for a day or two. I installed a new lifter pump after it cranked then died on me in a parking lot Saturday night. So far, I haven't had this problem since. I don't know for sure if installing the new pump solved the problem, or I have just been lucky.
any time you have a break in the line you will get air for a little bit till it runs and returnes the fuel,on your truck try checking the return line for leaks even a very small one(loose clamp)this could let the fuel run out of the lines ,back to the tank.any leak any where in your fuel line will do this because it lets air in allowing fuel to run back to the tank.
Thanks for the info, I have replaced the mechanical fuel pump with no improvement. I think it all started after changing the O rings to the injectors (a couple were leaking fuel onto the engine) a few months back. I may have damaged the return line in the process. I'll take a look.
I may have solved the "air in the Injector" problem. After looking more carefully, the fuel filter has a small drain at the bottom for draining water, sediments, ect. and since it has a drain tube running just below the engine, I did not notice that it had been dripping fuel to the point it drained the filter. I believe this was my problem. Thanks for all the ideas.
