I can't tell you how many times I was verbally assaulted by my step-dad for this very reason. For years I was convinced that he had turret's syndrome. I don't think anyone ever told him about this "tool blindness" phenomenon. I suppose a kid is always an easy culprit to pin a missing tool on. I'm just glad he never noticed all the missing beer and cigarettes.
Sounds like my dad, I was to blame for every missing item. I found a handy man jack years later right where he had left it, but of course he coulldn't remember...
Hate to break it to you guys but it isnt a sickness or disease, it is an epidemic.
A tool will only 'teleport' if it is needed at that very moment. You ever noticed any unused tool moving around on its own. You will only find it when you dont need it or have another one to replace it.
More Q's
And how come the drill press will swing your work around and send your beer flying only when you set the can on the press table?
Why is it if you use the most tiny amount of anti-seaze on what you are working on, it reappears, on your forearms, your face, your wifes new table cloth, your wifes behind, in your sandwich?
Why do the kids walk in at the same moment when you insult what you are working on in the most vile way possible?
Why will I look for an hour for my safety glasses only to find them on my head?
How come when you have the time there is nothing to work on and when you dont have the time all hell breaks loose?
And why when I get under my truck with an extremely awkward heavy peice resting on my chest, balanced by my forehead, all the tools layed out and fasteners in my hands and mouth that I have to use the bathroom?

I have the opposite problem, Tools I don't own mysteriously appearing . Later found out it was my tool thief dog, borrowing/stealing someone elses tools, and I don't mean small items, I'm talking about hammers, etc that weigh more than the dog (Pug). Problem now is figuring out what belongs to who.
i still have them hide from me, even in the pastels... I have a bright orange dead blow hammer for the visibility factor, but it still manages to be lost regularly, but have to say, not quite as easily.
and here I thought I was going crazy only to find out its an epidemic!!
blue screwdrivers, orange hammers, flourescent green picks...i got a whole bunch of colored tools.. I need a chart to know which is which!!

The Twilight Zone ran an exclusive on this subject years ago. Each minute in time is acted out in a set stage, as you pass through time, the stage is set for that moment. When one of your wrenches is missing, someone forgot to put that wrench in that moment of time. Now realizing that you are missing a wrench, it will be placed in a future time frame to which you will pass into next, be it 10 or 5 minutes ahead from which you will find your wrench exactly where you left it before it was missing.
The time continuum theory would burn the object before reentry of the said part of time resulting in a loss of all further objects. So I ruled this one null and void.
You guys got this nailed down! Worm holes that also explains it! How can a wrench used in the main shop in 2000 reappear in 2004 in the storage building?? WORM HOLES OR TRAVELING GHOSTS !
MEMORY ERASERS ::We have them but who puts them in and why? I beleive its them **** ghosts!!
I wish I had a nickel for every tool I have set down that disappeared into the vortex of tool space. I'm just glad they don't move the fire extinguishers in the shop, too....
I figured out it was me who keeps moving my tools somewhere else. Turns out I'm schizophrenic (Me, too!). Every time I notice something else that needs fixing, I undergo a personality shift & move all my tools around. OK. Not really.
Now for the rhetorical question: If I buy all my tools with fluorescent orange grips, will I have an easier time finding the one I want?
I also have experience with morphodyte tools. I have two sets of metric wrenches and two sets of inch wrenches. When I bought each set I know they were complete & not mixed. Yet now I have three 15mm wrenches and only one 9/16" wrench. I don't get it.
I have been able defeat most of this problem by having two to three duplicates of each tool. It still gets me sometimes since I can't afford two of everything . It's sometimes amusing to later find tool #1 in either a blatantly obvious or extraordinarily obscure location after the job is long done.
Now I have to deal with parts blindness. To make up for the success of my tool scheme the "parts ghosts" seem to be working overtime. Many a project has been halted dead to due for hunting that one special thingy. "Just had it a minute ago, where in God's name could it possibly have gone?"
Yeah, I did that...but it gets pretty bad when I can't find any of my 3 10mm ratcheting wrenches!!!!!!
and it doesn't stop with tool blindness. I once thought I was going deaf, until I found I was wearing my hearing protectors.
My partner and I do that all the time. Run a router/table-saw/skill saw and then switch off to hand planes & chisels. An hour later we're still yelling at each other from 6' away because we're both still wearing hearing protection!
