Thumbs up CTS Turbo Kits

Hey there. Just wondering if anyone out there is running a cts turbo kit. I just bought one a couple days ago for a good deal(I think so). I was just wondering what you think about it and how you have it set up. I'm looking for some extra power for the new tires i'm putting on in spring. I don't do alot of hauling just a small trailer and a couple of sleds. want to know how much a intercooler helps. First turbo, not sure what i'm getting into. Thanks

Spectramac has the only one I ever heard of till this post. Yours is number two.
The turbo will give you plenty of power for your new tires. Intercoolers are great, the cost is great as well. Then you have to figure out where to mount it and how to get the piping hooked up to it, the turbo, and the intake.

Yeah, I've got one on my 87. It builds lots of boost, but its not as good performance wise as an ATS. I don't know how you'd ever hook up an intercooler on one.

So does your's have the big tri-cycle pipe that hooks it all up on the pre-turbo side? I had a heck of a time getting it in there. Ended up having to cut and re-weld it.

Like I said, I'm new to turbos so bear with me. If your talking about the pipes that come from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo then ya i got that big tri pipe. My truck has a 2" body lift so it looks like it should go in ok. As for the intercooler, i wa goning to mount that behind the bumper and get the pipes plumbed in to come around the rad and up to the turbo and intake. my local custom exhaust shop said they would be able th bend it up no problem. I just have to notch a couple of holes beside the rad. What kind of boost you running. Haven't had any bad experiences? Does the exhaust side of your turbo have a press fit with a snap ring?. If you don't mind could you snap a couple photos an e-mail them to me. Thanks alot

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. That body lift should help getting it all in there. I don't know what year your truck is, but if its an 87 or newer you'll need to make some heat shields to put around the glow plug module in the back. Another (better) option is to relocate the module somewhere else, preferablely out where you can get at it. This involves totally rewiring the engine wiring harness, but it'll be worth it the next time you need to replace it.

When I first put the turbo on, I turned up my pump 3 flats. I had ran some Hypermax kits up there before, but it was really too much with a load on. I could get the boost up around 18 and it was getting way too hot. My second trip over the mountains I backed the pump screw off one flat and did a lot better. It will still go past 15 pounds if you don't pay attenion to the boost gauge though.

Wink

Here's what I do with my truck.

That's a heavy 12 foot camper and around 3500 lbs of boat and trailer. I slow down to around 45 on the really steep passes, but I get around 11.5 mpg. I get around 14 running around empty.

Thats a nice setup. thanks for the advice on moving the module. I'm not ready to bolt it on though, trying to figure out what gauges i want and where to mount them. My truck is a 93 1 ton crew with 35"'s, but i have a set of 37"'s going on in spring. Do you run your factory air cleaner? I was thing of mounting a k&n cone filter hoping it would help. thanks again

I'm running the old factory air cleaner with a NON-K&N air filter. Those things dust every engine they're installed on (unless you clean them weekly). It's cheaper in the long run to use good paper filters, once you figure out how much K&N is ripping you off for their clean and re-oil kits, not to mention the initial price for the filter itself.

Coming down off the soap box.

good advice on the air filter, makes sense to me once i get my gauges and hook up the turbo i'll tell ya how much it helped. Me and a couple of guys ar working out how the intercooler can be hooked up the best way. the way we have it designed so far will have an inlet & outlet both on th drivers side of the rad ( ford svt lighting intercooler). Hopefully i can make it work.

I guess you'll just have to make a straight out and a "back in" on the intake snail huh? You got a good aluminum welder?

Ya I got a cousin and a good buddy that are welders by trade .Welding alum. as they say is like "crazy glueing 2 sticks together". i'm hoping to do the bens all with premade corners from turbo kits. from what we can figure if we turn the snail 135 degrees it should shoot over top of the drivers side valve cover at a 45 degree angle to the rad. then if we loosen the (around) 6 bolts on the intake side of the turbo and rotate it 45 degrees up, we should be able to use anothe 45 degree angle so it points to a 45 degree anlew to th rad. from there on its a couple peices of pipe, a couple more 45's and it's done. hope you followed all that. I think it will work. If you dont mind could you send a picture of your turbo mounted? my trucks a daily driver so i can't really just dive in and a picture would really help me. (its getting pretty cold up here otherwise i'd park the truck and ride my street bike to work while i worked on the truck. talk to ya later

Believe it or not, I did get all that.
That sounds like it would work. If I ever find an intercooler I might try that too. I'll see if I can get some pics to ya, maybe tomorrow. It's pretty nasty outside today.

That be great. I just priced out my gauges an A-piller mounting kit today, I didn't relize it would cost so much - $390 Can. plus tax, holy crap! I might have to hold off on the whole intercooler setup right away and buy it piece by piece. Talk to ya later
