I have a 94 F150 , 302 and E40d trans. When I go to put the truck into gear in the morning the engine rpm's will drop and the truck will stall if the brake is held on. It feels like you are letting the clutch out (on a manual trans car)This problem seems to be temperature related somehow as it only happens when the trans is cold and the weather is 5 degrees or less. I think it is the overdrive kicking in at low speeds. What might cause this. The tourque converter itself or is it the electrical that controls it? any ideas. Thanks
sounds as if the tourque converter lockup clutch is trying to engadge or is hanging up some how. lockup wont even happen until ATF (TOT) is up to temperature and should also unlock with your foot on the brake.
How ever-----
at this cold of a temperature maybe the engine cannot adjust it's idle when put into gear. does this happen after the engine has warmed up or does this only happen when it's first started and everything is cold i.e. first thing in the morning. some motors get a little cranky in the morning when it's cold out and are also a little out of tune.
i would only suspect the T/C lockup if this hapenns when everthing is warmed up and driven and no matter what the outside temp's are. but instead look into engine systems first. look into your I.A.C (idle air control) sometime as they get a little older and dirtier they tend to act up on a cold start, not allowing enough cold engine idle.
hope this points you in the right direction
Your right, It does feel as if the tourque converter clutch is engaging. I thought it was the idle at first too but the truck will surge forward. If you let your foot off the brake it will take off. It is driving the vehicle at an accelerated rate. With the foot on the brake it will stall. However if the truck warms up, I have never had the problem. Only in the first 5 min of operation, and only when a gear is selected. does not drive forward in park. All other operation seems good. Smooth shifting and right gear selection . And I can cycle the OD on and off and it seems to work fine.
my friends truck does the same thing kinda. when i shift into reverse some times it will stall out but only when i've been drivin itit never does it in the forward gears. however when im sittin ata a stop light it will start shaking and stall sometimes. yor prolly right about the tc but could i be anything else. i have a tc off a c6 will it fit. by the way its a 90 f150 with a 300 auto overdrive and i guess its a e4od
It could be low fluid, or the filter isn't installed correctly. Either one could cause low pump pressure at idle which will allow the torque converter clutch to come on and stall the engine.
Well, It was simple afterall. When I pulled the pan off to have a look the trans filter fell off in the pan. I thought that was kinda strange. When I tried to put it back i place It kept popping off. The filter part where that little orange seal fits on was tapered. Don't really know why but it was a ford filter. Changed the filter and fluid and it works great. More power and no stalling.
one thing to watch on those filters is when taking out the old one is to check to make sure the old orange O ring is out of there. the old one usually sticks in there.

if the filter spout was tapered that means it shrunk. The only way plastic shrinks is due to extreme heat. You have a heat problem in your transmission if you dont adress it the problems will get worse.
