When i replace my 1993 7.3 IDI, should i look to replace it with another International motor, with the same year along with no turbo(which is what i have presently)? or should i look to another year (add turbo?) and are there any specific years i should stay away from because of the lack of space available?
i realize that from '94 on, the motor will be different regarding turbo, IDI, ect. i just know that i am looking on ebay and it seems i could get a newer year motor for less. i am looking to spend at least $4K on a replacement. any advice would be great.
Any IDI diesel motor will work just fine.
93 or 94 7.3 IDI turbo
88 to 94 7.3 IDI natural aspirated
The turbo is a very nice addition to the power, but the downpipe is tough to install what should be there, 3" round is real close to the engine block and cab. In my opinion it is worth the hassle. I have on on my 86, I installed a 2 inch body lift to make room for the downpipe, probably could have gotten by with 1 inch though.
Power Stroke or DI motors are a nightmare to install in an IDI truck with all the wiring changes and computer.
The fist thing to look at is its going to cost you 4000-6000 dollars for a rebuilt IDI a turbo built IDI will be 6000 dollars. Then add the price of a turbo another 3000 now your up to 9000 is your truck worth spending 9000 dollars on ?
I was told a turboed IDI is pretty good powerwise but spending 3 grand for a turbo is a good chunk of money. I currently have a F-450 with a 7.3 IDI N/A its slower than a turtle but its fairly reliable and simple. If your looking at the cheapest route just replace the engine with a basic rebuild and go for another 100,000.
You should look for a rebuilt through Diesel Auto Services if you google that you will get the DAS website.
You can get a turbo 7.3 reman engine for around 7000 dollars, turbo included. Another 1000 to get it installed unless you do it yourself. I paid 90 dollars for a two inch body lift and installed it myself.
I will put my 7.3 turbo IDI up against any stock early Power Stroke motor as far as power goes since I have the three inch exhaust on it.
Just bought a used 89 F250 for $1000 with 7.3 diesel. Swapped the engine into my dump truck myself. Just sold the trans for $150 and scraped the rest of the truck for another $100. Got to listen to the motor run and drove it home. Total cost of the engine is $750. Spend 4-9 grand for a rebuild???????? Check the local shopper and save.......... BIG BUCKS.
