First when did Ford stop using the PVH 4x4 systems in 2000? I found a rebuildable 2000 in a local salvage yard and I want to know which system it has...
Second, how is the power with the 4.0L and the auto? I had a 3.0L mated to a 5spd and deceided that a 3.0L with an auto is probably, well, under powered (I do drive a SHO afterall ). Is this true?
Also is there a significant difference in the gas milage between the auto/5spd? 4.0L/3.0L?
Any comments or testimonials (spelling?) would be great!
I can't wait for this friggin' website to get stable! I had a reply all typed out and when I hit the button to post, the website went offline (again!). Been surfin' other sites for the last 20 minutes and now I see FTE is online again, but my reply is lost.
Summed up- get the 4.0, can't help you on the 4x4 stuff.
Ford changed over from the PVH system to the current "constant engagement" system midway through 2000. So the one you're looking at could be either. If the front hubs look like they have black plastic "caps" on them with a small screen in the center of the caps, then it has the PVH system.
Thanks for the replies. I had pretty much deceided tthat the 4.0L was the way to go. I've just never driven a 4.0L truck. Is there any typical maintence/issues with these motors? (LOL, you were having trouble with the site and my internet is down now that I finished writing this reply. It is now 35 minutes later...)
Thanks for the info Rockledge. Is there a build date I should generally look for? I recognize your name from shoforum.com. I am normally oh_SHO there although I don't post much so I doubt you've heard of me. Anyway I'll check it out.
If it's a constant engagement front end, there won't be any hubs. It will look like a 2wd.
Once you have driven a Ranger with a 4.0l you will never go back........
I am getting 18 -20 Mpg with my 2003 Ranger Fx4 Level II 4.0l 20k.

I think I have a clue now regarding a build date to look for. Since the TSB that I set forth in the following thread addresses a "dust seal" issue, and since the dust deals are only found in Non-PVH 4x4 systems, and since the applicable dates for Rangers is "2000-2001 Ranger 4X4 vehicles built after 11/1/1999 only", then I think it is reasonable to conclude that 11/1/99 is the date when Ford officially dropped the PVH system and went to the current constant engagement system.
