The other day we were driving on the freeway and the Check Engine light came on. On this same day we noticed that the tranny had began shifting rough (just overall jerky operation.) We had the CEL read at Autozone and it was a P1131 malfunction control error metering. (whatever that means.) We cleared the code and haven't had it come back on since.
So, over the past week we have been driving and the transmission would shift really rough sporadically. Some days it was normal, others, bad. So last night driving in the city the tranny was shifting rough. It didn't seem like it was slipping, just rough shifting. The O/D Off light started flashing...and I noticed that as I was slowing down there was a loud humming noise. The humming noise would go away after you were at about 20MPH. We checked the transmission fluid cold this morning, and its way above the "Do Not Add" mark. It's red and looks and smells normal. Although, the engine oil is strangly down at the lowest mark.
We are at about 58,800 miles on a 1997 Expedition XLT 5.4L 4x4. Has the HD Tow Package. AFAIK, the tranny fluid has not been changed. We have done some moderate off roading in the past month, but the transmission problem just recently started in the past week.
Personally, I'd do a complete tranny flush/refill, since you don't believe it's been changed. That may not resolve the problem, but it can't hurt...just make sure you put the recommended fluid back in it - (should say on the end of the tranny dipstick what to use).
P1131 code is for the HO2 sensor not correcting for a lean condition. There are many tests to find the problem. Your best bet is to find a good shop with diagnostic abilities.
thanks for the info.... as of right now the O/D light is off and staying off and the tranny is shifting as normal... any ideas???
as of now i am going to change the fluid and filter.
and as for the Service engine light, once the code was erased it has not come on.... was it just a fluke?
I noticed that it says on the dip stick to add mercon V fluid... but i read somewhere not to add mercon v that ford actually recomends something else, is this true???... what is everyone adding? what about my tranny fluid being so high on the stick... way above the do not add ?
sorry for all the questions, I am new to the expedition and it's rare problems.

If the stick says Mercon V...USE Mercon V!!! ...
The problem has been noted that if it calls for plain ol' Mercon, and people use Mercon V, it can cause problems.
You may want to pull the speed sensor on top of the rear diff. It can get full of shaving and stuff and screw up the signal making of r-r-r-rough shifting and the O/D light b-b-b-blinking.
One that is dirty is usually shows those intermittent symptoms.
And change you fluid with whatever it says on the dipstick.
Thanks again for all the help guys.... Changed the fluid and the filter today, fluid was in need of a change ( was a dark red color) after changing it all, it shifted normal for about 40 miles, then it started shifting hard again and i think it actually skipped a gear at take off from a stoplight. After stopping at the store for about 20 minutes then driving again it had quit... seems that it starts doing it as it gets hotter????
I will look into the sensor, sounds like the next best way to go.
