Any special procedures to follow when engaging and disengaging 4x4 on a 2001 F-350 PSD Dually? Do they come with auto hubs ar manual? Do I need to Back-up to disengage etc...etc?........ A simple outlined procedure will help.
Thanks,
Obie
P.S. I only ask because I don't have an owners manual and I dont want to mess anything up. Soon as I get a manual I will stop these silly questions.
My 02 has is an automatic with 4x4 switch(not lever), and hubs with an "auto" and "lock" position. If this is what you have then this will help. While hub is in the auto position, you may "shift on the fly" so to speak into "High". To put the transfer case in low however I have to come to a complete stop, place trans in neutral, put foot on brake, then move 4x4 switch to "Low". For more aggresive 4x4ing you can move the hub to the lock position and the above procedure remains the same. Hope this helps.
If you have electronic shift on the fly (the button on the dash) then you have automatic/manual vacume engaged hubs, which means that if everything is working properly you should be in 4wd a few seconds after you turn the switch. Your hubs will automatically unlock a few seconds after you turn off the switch, you don't have to back up, although in mine you usually have to let off the throttle for the hubs to kick out (again this is assuming everything is working properly). Your hubs also have a manual lock in position, that is to say they can be locked in and out by hand just like any other axle hubs. One thing that really bothered me about my pickup is that the automatic and manual positions were not marked in any way on the hubs to indicate the ststus, and the owner's manual doesn't say which is the automatic and which is the locked position.
If you have the standard system (the stick on the floor) then you have regular lock out hubs that have turned by hand.
Thanks Alot all. I guess I got shift on the fly (little 3 postion switch on the dash). Sure am glad I found this site, especially being without an owners manual.
BTW a friend of mine had a automatic 99' super duty psd. The tranny needs to be in park or nuetral to get into low range. He didn't know that and turned the 4x4 **** on the dash and went wheeling in deep snow. He thought it was in low but the low range light wasn't on. Long story short the truck couldn't spin the tires in high range and it turned the tranny fluid black.
