Rusty Crank

I'm slooowwwly rebuilding a 302 and have had the motor torn down for a while now. I oiled everything the last time it was out of the plastic, but I found that the crank has some surface rust and may have minor pitting too. I had a machine shop check everything out a couple years ago. They just polished the crank, since it was within spec. I just got the bearings to assemble it, so it would be a drag to have to cut the crank down now.
What can I do to save it?

After I polish (which I haven't done yet), if there is minor pitting, is it acceptable to use as-is?

Also, this motor is only being put together to meet stock Mustang HO motor specs.

if you got pits, i would machine it. that is a lot of hassle to pull out and dissassemble after it isn't working right

That's what I figured, but was hoping otherwise since I already have the standard size bearings.
