I was camping at the beach during the last tropical storm. I quess between
the contant 40 mph winds and the torrential rain, and driving around in it,
some water worked it's way into the intake.

Did you have your hood up? lol....(jk) Ive heard of the "open/cradle" type of intakes allowing water to contact the filter, but never heard of the newer enclosed styles (like the stock system) getting wet unless they went crazy with a "zoodad" mod.
I went back and checked the broadcast messages at the Dieselman's website.
Broadcast message 1000,1103. With all the hard wind and torrential rain, and driving in it, according to this message, if conditions are just right, it is possible for water to works its way into the intake.
