I just installed a rebuilt 351M in my 79 F-150 got it running but I had to advance the timing greatly to keep it running. The sticker on the valve cover says 10BTDC but I can't even get it close to that or it starts popping and wants to stall. Also it won't start unless I give it a shot of starting fluid even if a its been running and I shut it off for a second and try to restart it. Any ideas what could be wrong?
i agree WD-40. i ran my boat off of this to get back to shore after running out of gas. 2 cans of WD doesn't last long on a 460. lol. didn't hurt the engine. that was about 150 hours ago. and it was fairly newly rebuilt. maybe 350 hours on it at the time.

Sounds like carb accelerator pump problem if it starts when primed. Does it squirt fuel when looking down carb & working throttle linkage? Also, I once had a "slipped" damper & I set timing to highest vacuum at idle to get a starting point until damper fixed.
The accelerator pump on the carb wasn't working but I rebuilt the carb and now it works and it runs alot better. I set the timing to 10btdc it runs alittle rough but will run better around 16-18 so I think the damper has slipped.
