................Awhile back there was a guy named Scott in the 73-79 forum who dropped a 4BTV Cummins (4cylinder) into his truck along with a NV4500 5 speed I believe . He said there were other folks who had also made this conversion and were supposedly getting 30 mpg . He , had the inter-cooler , turbo , and alist of other specific items for the engine that really made it perform . I believe it weighed about 900 pounds which is not TOO much weight for the Dana 44 heavyduty axle . ....sk...
the International IDI motors weigh in at a thousand or more, so it would begin getting pretty nose heavy... the powerstrokes are electronically controlled, so you have the wiring to deal with there. Not to mention the cost...
If you think your mileage is killing you, wait until you replace an injector pump for the Cummings at $1975 just for a rebuilt. Going to a 351w stroker will save some weight, but, with a truck as big as a 1969 F-250, I do not see any benefit to NOT having a big block.
A EFI 351W out of a later model Bronco will get about 15 mpg highway, but, the power will be no where near a 410. My tire wornout 390 with poor compression that blows smoke like a diesel pulls almost as hard as a newer diesel.
I looked into this somewhat a while back and I plan on getting a Ford 6.9/7.3 N/A pre 1994 diesel when it comes time for replacement of the 390. Being a 4x4, I need the whole drivetrain and having the motor rebuilt will be about $3000.00. I would not plan on finding any 94 and earlier diesel that did not need a rebuild.

I just looked one up for the Cummins, and the 88-93 pump was $875, and the newer version $1075. Although a bit over twice the price of the IH pumps, I'm sure the reliability is the same as well. The main comparison is that the Dodge is direct injection, which has been preven to produce more power than the IDI setup easier. I have grown up with both, and will say reliability on a direct over an idi is quite noticeable. Why do you think the Powerstroke is a direct injection setup? Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the IDI, I own one now, but there comes a price for the power as well, just like any other occasion. It's an individual choice based on needs and wants.
