speedometer trouble 1998 f150
Does Not Work , It Sits On Zero Untill I Reach About 45 Mph Than It
Shoots Up To 75 Mph And Falls Past 100 Mph And Stays There When I
Hit Hte Brakes It Will Only Go Back To Zero If I Hit A Bump And It Pushes Back That Way, The Odometer Works Fine And So Does The Cruise Control So Can Sombody Help Tell Me Where To Start To Look
The paint shop had my '98 F250 for about 7 weeks and they jumped started it off small jumper batteries on a few occassions.
I went there on December 10th and the battery was dead and they also needed more parts for repair of the hail damage. I instructed them to trickle charge the original (6 years old battery) before they call me to check out their repairs.
On the 15th I was told the battery (original) would not hold a charge and I went to Ford and bought new battery, and they installed it.
The speedometer worked fine (October 27,2004) before the body/paint shop had the truck, and on December 20,2004 I picked it up and it has never moved from zero.
The odometer and trip are working and the only other electrical that does not work now is the Auto light switch.
The auto-light switch turns the lights on ok, but when keys are removed and doors are closed the lights will not go out. Also the hood light does not go out after time.
I think the light sensor on the dash is dirty, and the energy saving relay may be fried too. They had to cut off the top skin from my supercab and although it is a great body and paint job, these two electric problems seem to dampen the good body and paint.
Sorry I went so long, I love my truck a '98 F250 SC 4X4 ShtBed XLT ,5.4L. It has 45,000 miles on it and I added Gibson supertruck,KN filter,Linex bed liner, fog lights, deflect shield,Lariat mud flaps, headlight protectors, sheepskin seat covers, and Teckstyle tonneu cover.
I've seen body shops not disconnect the battery when welding and fry electronic components.
The body shop will have a specialty shop check the speedometer.
I received the F150/250 shop manuals on Friday and the diagnostics for a speedo that stays at 0 and the odometer and all else work, is repair the speedometer.
The autolamps were staying on due to a corrosion condition on the contacts inside the autolamp module under the center dash piece.
The bodyshop was too liberal in fluids entering this area and probably the speedo too.
I was able to remove and clean off corrosion on the module and hope it works.
I will show it to bodyshop and get them to pay for new one just for insurance.
