Looking for a scan tool for my 96 ranger. Are the scanners @ the auto supply stores for $150 adequate enough & will i need a volt/ohmeter to check resistance on sensors, switches etc. Please help me
thx
Those will give you the DTC number but you'll have to look it up! It depends how much you want to be able to do. They have scanners for about twice that price but will tell you more like what the DTC really is and also read other parameters.
I have a AutoXray EZ Link which I'd have to say to stay away from because it doesn't read correctly on Ford products. After three months od email and calls, still no answers, I have to bad mouth them!
I bought a OTC breakout box which I find out now generates a DTC when connected. I found that out after trying to connect it and OTC Digital Automotive Tester together! On top of that the DAT wouldn't read a duty cycle.
So every piece of test equipment I purchased to work on my 97 Ranger 4.0L has problems. Glad that I don't do this for a living, I'd go crazy!!
