Speedo housing

Guys,
I'm looking for the speedo hookup for my '65 Cruise-o-Matic. Nearest i can tell, there's some sort of shaft that is inserted with gears on one end, which rides on the tail shaft. This speedo shaft, as I'll call it, is held in place by some sort of bushing. Then the speedo cable hooks up. Is this an aftermarket part, or am i doomed to some boneyard searching? If anybody knows the size of the hole, perhaps I can just plug it with some brass fittings (who says I need a speedo anyway, right?) just to get me by for the time being. Thanks.

I once ordered a speedo cable from Sacramento Ford parts, only later to find out that my local Car Quest guy had a nice book with lots of pictures. Your speedo cable will have a cylindrical metal block at the end (I am pretty sure about this). The core of the cable sticks out, and onto the end goes the speedo driven gear (plastic, varrying numbers of teeth, so you can change tires/rear gear ratios etc). The plastic gear is held onto the core and cylinder by a "C" shaped clip.

The whole end of the cable is held in the tail piece of your tranny with another retaining bracket -- to the side of the hole, there should be another smaller threaded hole that accepts a 1/4" bolt (better not quote me on that, try several different sizes and fine/coarse if your first one doesn't go in smoothly). There is an o-ring anound the cylindrical piece of metal that keeps tranny oil from puking out.

I see, after reading my above post, that a picture would be worth a 1000 words here. Got a manual? Better get some catalogs from Obsolete Truck Parts, LMC, Sacramento etc.

for some reason my trans doesn't have the clip to hold the cable in the transmission, instead it's a rather large hole (i'd guess maybe an inch in diameter) that something threads into. perhaps i should get the smallest expandable rubber freeze plug I can find and just slap that sucker in for the time being....

does anyone out there have one of these trasmissions that they might be able to take a pic of and post it for me? thanks guys
