Off Road Excursion?
Anybody use their 4x4 offroad for more than just gravel roads? I'm wondering why I see several stinkin' 'Burbs and have yet to meet my match in an X.
If you "got dirt" with pictures, can I see? I'm lousey at posting pictures, but I will get to some day. (I think the X is quite capable off road. And you can take the whole group with you!) It is quite capable for it's size, but I have already cut up the sidewalls crawling rocks/boulders, scratched up the paint a bit and scuffed a few bits below. The 265 tires it came with are silly, 285 should be stock and on 4X4 from the factory.
I am going to get the "edge" spring pack lift and get some bigger tires (33" or so, ie 285's) asap.
I don't have a picture that does justice to where we have been, wheel in the air, super steep up/down yet, but I will try to get one on tomorrows' hunt.
Here is the only stuff i got so far:

Thanks. I have a 4.5 Edge with 18" 35 Toyo MT's. They rub just a little in town but surprisingly not much when I am off road. I didn't trim anything since I am fine with the very little that it rubs. LabCab? Is that for Labrador?
No, but really, gashog. There are zillions of websites revealing access roads. Or call the park people and they'll send you topo maps. Some state maps even show some of the roads. But it's best to get the park maps or go to Barnes nad Nobles and get the National Geographic maps because they will show gullies, washes, and even rate the road (sand, high clearance, 4x4 only, etc.)
I can tell you, when I first took my family to Death Valley they were not enthused at the prospect. But both trips have become THE MOST MEMORABLE trips ever. But we'll keep trying to top them.
I like the looks of that X! 35's under about a 5" lift? All it needs is a nice roof rack to stow all the extra gear and we could be a corporate caravan
How do you like the Toyo MT's? Quiet enough? I've found the Xterrain's hold up extremely well on the sharp rocks and other debris compared to BFG and Firestone MT's, but they are somewhat noisey on the highway getting to places.
After finishing the house remod I want to put on a winch with a Warn bumper so 37's will fit, and headers. It'll be perfect until the wheel bearings go out.
As for where to go, I use a few books including "Backcountry Adventures" by Massey & Wilson, it has GPS coordinates (my wife is copilot) and maps, Topo USA 4.0 on the computer, the internet and I call the park for info and maps. Sometimes we just go and see where we end up.
cr,
Thanks. Good guess, its 4.5 Donahoe Edge. The Toyo's are absolutely great. I was expecting road noise from an MT but it is very very minimal. I barely (if I'm listening) hear these tires. A friend has your tires on his 2500 and he had the same complaint. I have no complaints off-road either. The lugs on the side do a great job protecting the side walls on those damned rocks and the pattern is nice. I remember roading with the stock tires and after one day they were chewed to heck. I was going to do the Death Valley trip last weekend but everything is closed due to the floods. 190 is washed out from Furnace Creek to Death Valley Junction as well as West Side Road and a whole host of other places. I think I might just say screw it and go anyway. I think I might have to do a Warn soon along with some lights since I just finished my remodel. Thanks for the idea.
Yup, I haul around two pointing labs almost wherever I go. The Excursion is almost perfect to haul my wife, two kids, the dogs and all the stuff that just has to go along, and tow the trailer to hunting and camping spots.
Great dogs and great rig.
Pat
Any suggestions on a setup for the Warn and lights? I really am going to get them now that you mention it.
