Did a 66 F-100 2wd have a front or rear oil sump. I am replacing the 390 that was in there and it had a front sump from a car I think. the new engine has a rear sump so I could put either one back in.
The oil pump boss on the FE engine (352, 360, 390 etc) is up front, so normally you need a front sump pan, even on the truck. That's how they came from the factory. Not one of Ford's better ideas.
However, the 4x4 engines were designed with a long pickup tube, and a rear sump pan so it would clear the front axle.
If yours has the correct oil pump/pickup tube setup for the rear sump pan, consider yourself very lucky! They are very expensive on E-bay.
The rear sump pan saves a lot of mess, since the oil drain plug in the front sump pan spills all over the 2WD front crossmember.
Congratulations on having one!
It's a 4X4 With a long extended internal Pick Up Tube like double hump Fox platformed cars, or later 4X4 F series with a 351, 351M/400 or 460s.

Whoops. . . . . . excuse me!
I see you've already said that John. Man, you're qwik this mornin'.
PS
As for mess on engine X member during oil changes, F series & E series oil pans are rear drain front hump pans to prevent such mess. Any pans which are side draining, front hump are from a passenger car, not from a truck.
But it's easy to remedy!
Simply add a thick piece inside pan, at back of hump by welding. Then drill & tap adequate dia hole to take aftermarket, magnetic, drain plug/ qwik drain valve that threads into this new, relocated, thread boss you just installed. I know this because same deal exists with 460s & 429s & I've done several.
I keep forgetting to mention this when I discuss installing 460s into F series Trucks tho' . . . . . DUH

The rear sump pan uses and extended pick-up tube to locate the meshed screen end at the rear as the pump is in-deed in the front side of the motor. The rear sump pans are a preferred/desired item for the hotrodded motor as the force to gravity or "g's" will cause the black gold to locate at the back of the pan, where the pickup is located, and provide for uninterupted source of juice. Also helps the 4x's when hill climbing not to get thirsty...
