I have a 97 3.0 V6 Ranger. I have been getting a loud squealing noise from the engine compartment. It sounds electrical,it doesn't sound like anything rubbing. It doesn't happen all of the time but when it does, it happens after I stop at a stoplight and set a little while and right after I start moving again. It will also do it idling in park. Also, I was sitting in a line of traffic and I would put the truck in park and while it was idling I would hear something click on and off under the hood. Whenever I would put it in drive it would click again. My oil pressure gauge would drop to zero and pop right back up to normal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
You may have a few issues. A squealing sound is normaly a slipping belt. The clicking is probably the AC compressor going on and off, turn the climate comtrol to off and see if this stops. The compressor runs in many of the settings, not just the AC ones. I'm not sure about the oil gauge, it could be electrical but I would want to put a real gauge on it just to be safe. Remember the sendor is only a switch that closes when you have a few punds of pressure, it's not a real gauge.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-May-02 AT 08:10 PM (EST)]I,ve listened to the noise with the hood up i doesn't come from the fan belt area. It,s more around the top, side ,or back of the motor. It doesn't sound like a belt it,s more like an electrical sound. It does it at an idle or after i get going but it's the same sound and loudness. It only last for a second or two at a time but it's loud enough for people in other cars to hear.
