my truck is a 1987 f150 lariat with the 4.9 6 in it. when i acclerate from say 35-40 the truck slows down like it wants to shudder.... it almost acts like its sticking? could this be my tranny? or fuel system? like the injectors. plus when the truck is idling or in drive the fuel pump is always running. is this normal? its an annoying buzz. and with the dual tanks are there two different pumps ?
That could be a whole lot of different things. Have you read the codes to see if anything is generating?? When is the last time you did a tuneup; plugs, wires, distributor and rotor?? Mine was running really bad and I tune her up and ran much better.
My 87 F150 has 3 pumps and no they shouldn't run all the time. One in each tank and one on the frame. Mine was doing th at and I had to replace the fuel pump relays. They are cheap enough only a few buck apeice if I remember right.
The fuel pumps will run as long as the engine is running. If the engine is running, it is not a problem with the fuel pumps running or not. They might not have correct pressure, but running is not an issue. The in tank pump from the tank selected with the switch runs along with the high pressure in line pump continuously while the engine runs. Pull your codes to see if any fault codes are stored in the computer and go from there. I'd think it could be EGR that is causing the hesitation, but do some troubleshooting and see for sure.
they also list the code definitions. Be aware, you will likely have to use the analog volt meter method. All the '87 trucks I've heard about on this forum do not have a working check engine light in the dash, so counting the blinks on the check engine light is not an option. If that site doesn't tell you what you need to know, post back.
