I could see a good mixture of maybe throwing in a good gauge, mechanical, or elecrtric depending on preference, and using the stock dummy light setup to run an 'aftermarket' warning light system mounted in the dash maybe? Just in addition to the gauges a row of lights in a more visible place than the cluster to warn you about problems?
You could mount the gauge, and run the idiot light wiring and mount it right next to the appropriate gauge, kind of like how a shift light would be mounted nextto or on a tach? and just use a red or yellow bullet light about the size of a dime that is flush with the mounting surface.
