Hi,
Mine became so loose that it would come off in my hand if I shifted hard enough. I tried to find an after market one buteverything was too small and required a set screw. The shaft is splined in mine (97, 4x4, supercab, 4.0) so I could never really find anything to fit. My shifter diagram (on the ****) also vibrated enough to wake the dead. I found a 1/4 inch wood screw (maybe larger) and screwed it up into the **** (from the open end) so it would press against the plastic shift diagram. (There's actually a hole in the back side of the **** for your convienience). That completely stopped the vibration. I then wrapped the splined shaft with (3-5) layers of electrical tape and pounded the **** back onto the steel shaft. Just experiment with the amount of tape... I used a piece of rag so as not to mark up the ****. That was a year ago and haven't had any problems since. Good luck!
I would like to know how to get the damn thing off also....
I've tried unscrewing, pulling, and all sorts of other things that are probably really bad for it.
Help!
on each side of the tunnel. Grip the shifter **** firmly with both hands and pull up. Exercise extreme caution that you do not hit your self in the chin, when the **** comes off. I kid you not.
To re-attach the ****, put a drop of crazy glue inside the **** and seat onto the shaft where you want it to stay.

The actual steel shaft that goes to the floor/transmission is splined on the end (that's the splined shaft I'm talking about). Splined means grooved out- like long slots around the shaft (same way some gears are fixed to shafts). The shifter ***** is also splined on the inside. The splining keeps the **** from rotating around the shaft. You should be able to pull the **** straight off. The electrical tape method really works, it's just a bitch getting the **** back on- bang it hard!

The best way I have found to get them off is to take an appropriate sized open end wrench and place around the shift lever at the base of the ****( pull the boot down slightly for access) and then hit the wrench with a hammer. comes right off. The shifter diagram can be stopped from rattling just by removing it from the **** by using a small pick around the edge and then place a small dab of silicone on the backside and reinstall bt pressing into placeTrending Topics
