Ooops, my bad. Thought it was an automatic car. Sounded kinda strange how you could do that with an auto, but with the shifters in these 5/6 spds I could understand you hitting first again.
Boy, did I mis-read this one or what. Guess I should wake up first
Friend runs a '87 Mustang. When he still had the original 5 spd with one of those fancy-dancy Pro 5.0 shifters in it he did that. Running these kinds of tranny's you can't get a real shifter. Well, he did a full 6000 rpm powershift from 3rd to 2nd . Things didn't fair as well for him as you. It cleaned the material right off the clutch disc, also pulling darn near ALL the keepers from the valve stems. OUCH!! Can't imagine what rpm that motor went to when this happened, but the car sure did nose over pretty hard. No major damage to motor. Some new retainers/keepers and clutch disc and he was back at it.
See, those stupid shifters are spring loaded to help make the 2-3 shift more accurate. Well, that spring also makes it easier to yank back into 2nd if you are not careful about how you pull back for 4th. If you happen to apply any force toward you when pulling back, it will go rigth back into 2nd, as proven. Well, the 5 spd finally coughed it's guts later that year and I found a Doug Nash to replace it with. It has a real vertical gate shifter in it now and works flawless.
I've hated those internal rail tranny's from day one.

1-2 is hard to mess up(unless the clutch has too much heat in it).
2-3 I keep my elbow in next to my belly, and palm the shifter, this forces the hand/shifter in the direction of 3rd.
3-4 I make a point of keeping my elbow up in the air, and i wrap my hand over the top of the shifter, this ensures a straight yank towards 4th.
Yup, that's the story he has told me back when he ran it. That was the problem that day. He just yanked back......BAM, it went into 2nd! He's was pretty good with it overall, BUT then there was those moments when all went wrong. I'm so glad I convinced him to convert to a REAL transmission. He's glad too, the extra gear picked it up .15 and almost 2 mph in the 1/4.
The Nash is just superior to the T5 or World class or Tremec(or whatever). Way more tranny then his 302 will EVER need.
jseim44.....the 1-2-1 shift was a MISTAKE. That was the problem.
o DUH that makes sence. sorry bout that. reminds me of the first time i drove a stick - 70 GTO 455 and the Munci 4 speed - i said "God I hope this is 3rd gear" and it was. funny cause when i first got in to take off i thought "This better be 1st" cause there was only about an inch between them!!!!!!
