ok this may sound stupid, but i am looking at a 03 350 with srw. i am just wonderin what exactly is pilot injection? Why are they takin it off and what good does it do? is it good or bad to have it?
thanks,
nick
Pilot injection, as I understand it, is injecting a small amount of fuel into the cylinder before the main charge. Sort of like a pilot light to start the burn. This is supposed to make the engine run smoother, quieter, and I believe help start it on cold mornings. (I'm not quite sure on the last one, might not be true) If I could tell you why it's causing problems Ford would be paying me lots of money. It seems that it only causes problems in a very small number of vehicles but they're disabling it in all 6.0's to prevent further losses. Having pilot injection can be good and bad. If it runs well, without problems, I'm sure you'll be very happy with the pilot injection. However, you have to protect your current computer flash like it was made of gold, and even then, sometimes the dealer will reflash it anyways from what I hear. Anyone that knows better, feel free to correct me. I own an '04 and the pilot injection was disabled by the dealer before I even test drove it.

Pilot injection is a program that injects a small amount of fuel 'prior' to the main injection event that quites the diesel bark/rattle at idle.. Ford had a problem with the injectors side loading, possibly causing premature injector failure.. So it was flashed/turned off.. Some of the 03-04 owners still have it, and others if they've had driveabilty/running problems have lost it to correct the running condition with the later calibration/s flash.. Some like the pilot, others think it to be annoying as the engine tone changes like a 'light switch' at the application of the slightest throttle.. Some like a true diesel tone, and others like the quite at drive throughs ect. At this point it cannot be flashed back on..
Pilot injection only worked at an idle. Soon as you rev up it went away. Ford put out new flashes (firmware) that eliminated PI. If you bought one before it got eliminated and never had it flashed, you will still have it.
The 6.0L is an International VT365. You said 350. Do you really mean the 6.0?
