Question A4LD problems

I just traded for a 1991 Explorer 4.0 4WD with a A4LD tranny. At first the selecter lever would only go down into Drive, and not into 2nd or 1st. Also there was no noticable park or reverse. I unhooked the cable end at the transmission and was able to manual move the shift lever on the transmission into park.By rocking the vechicle a little I was able to get the parking pawl to engage with the engine off. I had my son start the engine and apply the brake. I then manually moved the lever on the transmission one detent click (for Reverse) no reverse, but it wanted to move forward. I saw that the lever on the transmission appered to be bend in towards the transmission. I strightened it and reattached the shift cable. I was then able to move the selector in side the vechicle into all ranges. However, when in park, reverse, netural the vechicle still trys to move forward. Transmission fluid appears a little burned, by that it is a lite brown instead of nice red. I relize that it likely needs an overhaul, but was trying to determine what caused the problem, and what to look for when I get it torn down. I have done overhauls on many c6 trannys and had great success. I have done a few AOD's and had several of them eat my lunch... Or is there a simple solution to the tranny problem?
