Parking brake adjustment

Hello. New to the forum and could not find another post which identifies my question.

I have a 99 F350 CC DRW that needs a parking adjustment. I've found the adjustment roller but cannot seem to get the adjustment correct. Which way do you move the adjustment roller to increase the tension on the brake?

If the adjustment roller is fully tightend, would the next course of action be to replace the pads? If so, is this just as simple as removing the rotors to gain access to the pads?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Don't know about the 99's but my 97 is "self-adjusting". Like the mustang clutch cable setup. There is no provision for adjustment. If broken the entire park brake assembly has to be replaced.

I was told this today...

The parking brake on our trucks are self adjusting but they can wear out. Inside the rear rotors is a small brake almost like a drum/shoes for the parking brake. Your shoes wear out, your brake doesn't hold.

Wether this is true or not I'll soon find out. But it's something I have to say I didn't know about.

Where is your parking brake located? Some F350's have them on the back of the transmission some are inside the rear rotors.

Parking brake adjustment

Hello. The parking brake on my 99 is located in the drum of the wheel. Underneath the truck and on the back side of the wheel there is a oblong rubber gromet. If you pull this out you can see the adjusting wheel. This wheel moves up and down.

Thanks for all your comments.
Regards,

If your vehicle has drum brakes they should be automatic adjusters. You may need to remove the drums and check them. The adjusters are probably frozen.

With disc brakes its a manual adjustment. Same system I've got. My truck wouldn't hold in my driveway so I installed a MICO lever lock system to the front brakes. My p-brake is adjusted properly and sets tight. It holds better in reverse than forward but not safe enough to leave unatended.

As I understand it, the adjustment roller on the backside of the wheel needs to be adjusted to tighten up the brake. If the roller is adjusted all the way and the truck still moves, then I suspect the pads which are inside of the rear drum need to be replaced.

This is only the assumption at this point as I was looking for clarification.

Thanks

Well my 2000 F-250 has rear disk with a drum inside for the emergency brakes. The brake shoes could be worn.

Remove rubber plug on backside of backing plate. They adjust just like a drum brake.
