Can an FE run too cool?

My 352 temp gauge never even hits the 1/4 mark, is that normal? Not sure if the gauge is working but i was always supprised how i work around warmed up engine and hardly ever burn myself.

Yes, an FE can run too cool. If it's too cool it will cause excess wear on the cylinder walls. It will also not boil out gasoline and water from the oil.

I'd get an actual temperature gauge and see where it really is.

It should answer questions you may not have even asked!

That sounds like mine when I first got it, it was just the thermo stuck open.

Would that effect the heater? My heater seems to work fine. Is the thermo in the top radiator hose on the FE?

Yup. An FE usually runs between 160 and 195 after warming up, depending on which thermstat you are running. I started out with a 160 but wanted something a little hotter to protect my cylinder walls. I'd still try an actual guage, don't let that needle guage (spelling doesn't look right) mess with you. Exact numbers are always better.

The heater will blow out colder than normal air if the thermo is stuck open, and hotter than normal air if stuck closed.
if your heater seems to work fine than maybe you just have a 160 stat. my stock gauge only gets a little past 1/4 way with a 180 stat.
