I am going to graft an 88 F-450 rear frame and axle on to my SRW truck. I don't have the rear end yet. I am wondering if the original F-450 had a proportioning valve or ABS to prevent rear wheel lockup? Anybody know?
Yes there is an "ABS" metering type set up on the rear to prevent rear end lock up when truck is not loaded. Not sure if you know but the two frames are different widths.
Depending on your truck, you may be able to just swap the axle and springs and leave the frame alone. It would involve cutting off the spring and shock mounts on the axle and re-welding them at the right widths, but that seems alot easier than chopping the frame up. F250, 350 SRW, and 450 all used 3" wide springs as far as I know, so the spring hangers shouldn't need to be changed. They might need to be moved a little if the 450 had longer springs, not sure if it did or not. You may also want to look into changing the brake master cylinder and booster to the 450 master and booster. I think the 450's used hydroboost instead of a vacuum booster. I had hydroboost on a Chevy dually and really liked it. Wish I had it on my F350 too. Good luck with your project!
The frame on my truck isn't as strong as the 450. Also the spring shackle are really nice on the 450 (cast). So for me it will be a nicer end product if I do the frame splice. I will look into the master suggestion
