Many of you may not be Country Music fans, but the music industry in general has lost one of it's greatest. Waylon Jennings is dead at age 64. One of the more memorable tunes he is known for is the theme from "The Dukes of Hazzard" just to jog your memories. The "Highwaymen" are one short. I hope this does not sound wierd, but my heart is heavy tonight.
I tuned into the country station tonight on the way home. They dedicated some well deserved time to him. I'll never forget that good ole country music.
"Well the honky-tonks in Texas were my natural second home,
where you tip your hat to the ladies, and the rose of San Antone.
I grew up on music that we called Western Swing...
It don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is still the king.
Lord, I can still remember the way things were back then,
In spite of all the hard times I'd live it all again....
To hear the Texas Playboys and Tommy Duncan sing,
Makes me proud to be from Texas where Bob Wills is still the king.
You can hear the Grand Ole Oprey in Nashville Tennessee,
Its the home of country music, on that we all agree...
But when you cross that old red river hoss that just don't mean a thing,
Once you're down in Texas Bob Wills is still the king....
Well if you ain't never been there then I guess you ain't been told...
That you just can't live in Texas unless you got a lot of soul.
Its the home of Willie Nelson, the home of Western Swing...
He'll be the first to tell you, Bob Wills is still the king."
Ironic, all these years I've felt the above tribute that
Waylon wrote to Bob Wills deserved to be written about Waylon. Rest in Peace....
Ever hear the song he did "I don't think Hank done it this way"? Clint Black did a remake a while ago named "I don't think waylon done it this way. So some of Waylon's songs have been sang about himself. He might be gone but fortunately he left behind his music and that will nevr die!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-02 AT 11:00 AM (EST)]A real country/honky tonk legend is gone. I had a chance to see the Highwaymen back in the early/mid 90's and pasted it up. Big mistake I still regret. You really don't hear this kind of country anymore and it is a shame because it was about real life and real people without all the glitz and glame. Sad day to be sure.:-(
