400 Engine noise

'79, 400 Engine noise

I have an engine noise, a dull clicking sound, does it at a certain RPM, about 3000. It does it when sitting there or when traveling down the road. Things I have ruled out, engine timing ping, tappets, rod knock, but it could be a loose timing chain, but I don't know what that sounds like. It has been doing it for a couple of years.

At that rpm could it be the rockers not getting oil. If you had the valve covers off at that rpm the oil shoots over the fender.

Engine noise.

I havn't had the rocker covers off, I will do that soon and reply.

I'm not saing to do that. I saing that the rockers are only get oil that defleckes off the valve covers. If you do pull the valve covers check the rocker and the push rods.

Got an EGR valve? Is it hooked up and working? Could be "EGR ping"...this is similar to spark knock. Happens when EGR is taken out or stops working but the vacuum advance is left alone.

BTW How is your oil pressure?
