I was at the county fair this weekend and another PSD drove within a few feet of me and I noticed that it was considerably quieter than mine. It seems to me that mine has become increasingly loud as I drive it more (I have about 1500 miles). I do not know my build date because I cannot find it on the drivers side valve cover and I cannot post pictures of the sticker here so that someone can help me out. I am taking the truck to the dealer on Friday for it's first oil change.<O</O
My questions are as follows:<O</O
1) Should I request a re-flash?<O</O
2) Has anyone had a positive result from a re-flash on a 04?<O</O
3) It is possible that the truck I heard over the weekend was a 7.3, are they quieter?<O</O
4) I smell a very skunky diesel smell anytime my widows are open regardless of the wind direction; is this to be expected?<O</O

Reason: mistakes
2) Has anyone had a positive result from a re-flash on a 04? Yes
3) It is possible that the truck I heard over the weekend was a 7.3, are they quieter?
No

No
Just my opinion. I have sat next to an 04, same engine build date that I could barely hear running. Mine, you have to turn it off to hear someone talking. Go figure but I did not buy the Ford to sneak up on people.
I also have a 04 CC 6.0 SWB and had the "skunky smell" for about the first 1200 miles or so. I now have about 2000 and no smell. I thought it smelled funny, too. But, I waited and it went away. It almost smelled like something was burning in. Computer parts do that sometimes, smell funny when you first put power to them.
The engine is only loud when it is cold. When it warms up, it is quieter.

Big is correct.....WELCOME to the site, please read the Guidelines… Check out the list of forums and make sure you read the headings and Read First: notices in each forum.
My 04 is quiet. build date of 01-21-04. If they reflash it they will own it. I leave a note in it each time it goes for service. "Don't touch it I like it the way it is"..It has a slight surge when cold but I can live with it. 8000 miles, stock, tows great, very acceptable mileage...Good Luck
Sounds like you may have heard one that still had Pilot Injection working. Not many of those left, I'd guess. It does make them a lot quieter. My 03 came with PI and was about as quiet as my 01 dmax/allison. But it was disabled in one of the flashes.

As I've told you before, I'm now driving an 04 GMC Yukon XL SLT 3/4 ton 4x4 6.0 Quadrasteer Autoride. Is that a problem? After I went through the DSB process and forced ford to buy back my truck because of the bad motor, I just could not bring myself to take the gamble on that motor again.
You know, I was a total diesel guy after owning my first one, an 01 Chevy HD2500 dmax/allison. Quiet, great fuel economy and totally reliable. I was thrilled with my Excursion when I got it. But dealing with all the stuff that motor brought me and the decreasing fuel economy that the on going HP wars seem to be bringing us in the diesel segment have really put a damper on my diesel enthusiasm. Don't get me wrong, I think they're still great motors. But, for my pulling needs, the gasser does the job well.

You are challenging and baiting here. You are obviously anti-Ford. This is a Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum. I would prefer you take your unhappiness and spread it elsewhere.
I did a little research. The 6.0 was introduced in December 02. By end of July 03, approximately 95,000 6.0's were sold in F-series trucks and Excursions. About 16,000 were sold in July 03 alone. The problems with the 03 expressed in this forum are indeed a small percentage of 6.0s sold. Even if you factor in the 500 or so buybacks for 03, that is only .5 percent.
One of the things discovered over time have been that low mileage has been cured by replacement of the ICP (Injection Control Pressure) sensor and/or the EP (Exhaust Pressure) sensor. Did your dealer ever do either one of those replacements? So rather than say all 6.0s are bad. Let's just say you got a raw deal and not so good service from a dealer.

I disagree. Please back up those statements.

Oh, well, since you'd prefer it and all.

I'd like to see the research on the 500 buybacks, please.

ICP was replaced, EP was not, AFAIK. But the mileage was never really a big complaint for me. It went down some after one of the flashes but it was in line with most everyone was reporting. 14 all around, best of 17.5.

I never said or alluded that all 6.0's were bad. I know that the majority of them are fine, especiall the true 04 builds and newer. I think my dealer did a good job for me. I never once said otherwise.
I owned a ford 6.0PSD. I don't own it anymore but that does not make my experiences any less valid. Do you ever answer posts about trucks you don't own anymore? Ford is not off my shopping list. I hold no umbrage towards them. I just decided that for *ME*, the 6.0PSD was too much of a risk to try again given my experience.

How else is one supposed to take what you posted?
I got my information from an article in Automotive News dated August 25, 2003 where the author cites Ford spokesman Glenn Ray. Ray puts they buyback number at 475 in that article. The author writes "almost 500" buybacks. The author also cites a "recall" on ICP sensors. There was no recall on any 6.0 at that point. TSB maybe but no recalls.
Jeb you have always been a Ford hater.
You never "made" Ford buy your truck back, they bought it back because they are a great company that takes care of their warranty problems.
If they didn't want to buy it back, you don't have enough money or enough years left on your life to "make" them buy back anything.
I would prefer that you take your negative attitude back to the Chevy forum. Your posts all stink of your rotten heart. Leave us alone, please.
