Today I modified my stock air box to be like a cold air intake. I took the box and flipped it upside down, removing the bottom of it so that the intake side of the filter is now open, just like a K&N type system. I just removed the very bottom of the box so the filter is still secured just like it was stock. I havent gotten to drive it yet ( gotta do dang homework!) but hopefully it will help my 4.9 breathe. Has anyone else tried anything like this before?
I think many have done this, but why bring in air that is warm from the engine compartment, the tube that goes to the front is not restrictive at all, except for where it narrows. Cutting off this end willl do better and bring in cold air. there was a site a whiel back with all the comparisons that are available dyno tested and the best result was insulating the stock box with a k&n replacement filter. I guess the only cool thing about what you did is that maybe you'll be able to hear the air going through the filter.
That lil tube runnen from the grill to the air box can't flow all that well. It's inlet can't be more than a 3in by 1.5in opening. I mean what I did is almost the same as installing a K&N system isn't it, besides the K&N filter.
I took the stock top of the airbox off, and put 2 cone filters on each of those intake tubes, sounds really cool, and im about 80% sure there is some more power there, especially at higher RPMs.
I think that 3" X 1.5" opening is still bigger than that cheesy little throttle body... at least mine looks that way...... I put a k&n filter in my stock air box and it seemed to make a little difference... I am in the process of making an upper plenum to accept the throttle body from the 5.0/5.8. It might not make any difference but I'm doing it because I have an extra upper plenum to mess with and I got a 5.8 t/b for next to nothing... I tried two little universal filters right on the throttle body inlet and it sounded real cool but it didn't really run too much better...
I was thinking about buyin to cone filters to put directly on my throttle bodies, but couldn't find any filters that would fit. Where did you find yours, and how much did they cost/
I mounted them to the 2 tubes coming from the throttle bodies, on the end that i pulled out of the airbox. bought 2 from autozone, 25 $ a peice. When you go to install, it will be a tight fit, but in no way is it forced really hard. The way i put them in is to turn it approx 45 degrees, so that about half the filters little rubber connecter is in the tube, then turn it without letting any come out on the other side, so that it works its way it, then i just tightened the stock wire clamps and your as good as new. I left the bottom part of the airbox on for both support for the filters and to supply a small amount of cold air. I have talked to local muffer shop and he is building me a steel tube to connect to the throttle bodies so it looks good( im gonna paint it a nice bright red with alot clear ontop of it). If i knew how to post pictures i would, but i cant. WOW i like sitting here in chemistry typing about cars... lol My chemistry teacher is so cool...
lol i hear ya man, im sitten in history now tryin to think of ways to improve my 4.9. Have ya done anything else to yours? I cut one of my cats off and put a glass pack on that. I'm thinken about taken the glass pack off and just runnin the one cat but who knows.
The two I ended up using were for a motorcycle believe it or not.... I can't remember the application but if you know the size of the t/b, they can be ordered by size... I think they're about 2".. I think they were about $15-20 each..
Im taking the stock air filter and since the radiator support has 2 holes for either side, Im cutting another hole on the other side of my air filter housing and running a tube to the other side, like a V setup... less restriction to air intake
I'm havin trouble gettin the ride side of the box (the drivers side toward the fender) out from where it's held. Plz give some advice i wanna get this dad gum thing done!
i had my airbox upside down for a while but fixed it once i realized that rain would pour into the filter, being paper it absorbed the water and i only imagine its awful for the engine. try using shorter tubing or something if you insist on doingthis.
placeing filters directly on to the tb wont make a differnce. the cam will only allow for so much air to be taken. granted restricken is something to think about but when you see someone placeing a four inch home made pvc pipe under thier hood,, its not gonna help any more than a reg. 3 inch..i guess what im sayin is save the money by making something at home but be smart about it and follow designs of the companies(k&n) that have done their home work(invested money into testing products) besides that your and my in-line six will just never beat anythingin a race that has four wheels..its sucks i know ...but i can pull thier house across the street.. thats cool
the stock cam actually aint too bad. it could use a little more lift but this could be accomplished with higher ratio rockers. they kept it low to save wear on the top end i guess.
removing the casting marks and sharp edges from the intake and exhaust ports is your best bet. it would actually cost less than a K&N FIPK if you can afford the down time. Just have to pay for some bits and gaskets.
