During warm weather starts, this '01 7.3 starts, but you have to restart glow plugs a few times. When it does starts it lops. When the engine is warm, it starts fine with no lopping. Would this have anything to do with the weight of the oil? Any ideas? Thanks

The oil is Rotella 30W. I understand lopping is a cold weather characteristic, but this is happening in warm weather. Maybe need to go to a multi-grade...not sure.

mine used to do that as well, until i switched to 5-40 synthetic oil...no more lop, even at -8* not plugged in
I think i may need new glow plugs so what are a good brand and what do i need to stay away from. And what pins in the 4 valve cover plugs are for the glow plugs inside 2 or outside 2 i'll be heading out to the driveway with the old multmeater later on. Thanks
What about the glow plugs you find on ebay the LS brand duel coil or something like that Faster heating i just don't want tips braken off in my Baby
The pins you are looking for on a 94.5 to 97 are the A & E pins which are the outer two pins and on 99 up they are the outer two on each side of the plug and what I do to test them is clamp my test light to the positive side of the battery and probe the valve cover pins and if the light turns on the glow plug is good.
I just had the same prob with my 00, It just started when it got cold, 15 this morning and it wouldn't start at all. Do you need to pull the valve covers to test the glow plugs?

No. The simplest way is to connect a test light grounding clamp to the positive terminal of the battery and then backprobe at the valve cover plugs. If the light comes on then the glow plug for that circuit is good.
