If it is a V8 flathead with the down low & front dizzy and center head water outlets the ID will be in the center of the cast on bellhousing. If the water pumps are mounted to the heads it is pre 38. !932-48 were 221 or 239 cubes.
If it is a later version with the modern style dizzy and front of the head water outlets the date code will be on the right rear of the machined intake surface. It is almost impossible to ID the stroke of a flathead from the exterior as so much was swapped around. These are either 239 or 255 cubes.
