Check Engine Light

I have a 4x4 extended cab 93 Ranger, and everytime I go on an extended drive my check engine light comes on after about 1 hour of highway driving, I loose power (can't get it to go over 45mph), and my gas mileage plummets. I have to pull off to the side and let the car cool off for about 10 minutes before I can drive it again. The check engine light does not stay lit. I have taken it to the local ford dealership and they have not been able to figure it out. They replaced the MAF sensor, and suggested that I buy a new engine computer because they were 90% sure that is where the problem was since they couldn't get any codes. So I bought the computer from the dealer and replaced it but my problem is still there. Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be? Also can I demand my money back from Ford, since their diagnostics have not solved my problem? Thanks

The ECU should store codes, these are called continuous codes. You can pull the codes yourself using a $30 scanner or an analog meter. I don't think you will have much luck getting your money back, they will just say it was part of the problem. When you say they couldn't get any codes, do you mean they got a pass code or no codes. No codes could be due to a ECU problem.

Check Engine Light

The first time I took it, they said they just got a pass code. They told me that I had to drive it again until the check engine light came back on, and take it back to them making sure that I had not opened/closed the ignition switch more than 30 times because the codes would be erased from the computer memory. I drove the truck until the check engine light came on (but it goes off while I am driving), and took it in to them. They claimed they got a code for a faulty MFA sensor, so they went ahead and replaced that. The next time I took my truck on a long trip, the problem came back and it had actually gotten worse. So I took it back in to Ford, and they said they were not getting any codes (they didn't specify if no codes or a pass code). So they told me that they were 90% sure that the computer itself was at fault and that I had to replace that. I went ahead and ordered it from their parts deparment and replaced it myself. Sure enough it did not solve my problem.

I would just get the scanner and then you can check the codes as soon as the CEL comes on. You need the codes to determine the problem.
