Speedometer needle fluctuations?

Speedometer needle fluctuations?
Anyone had a problem with their speedometer needle oscillating at speed? I removed the speedometer sensor/gear assembly at the trans but couldn't really find anything wrong (to the untrained eye). The gear moved freely and the electrical connection seemed secure. I did notice a film of "fluid" around the connector but nothing too out of the ordinary. Also, should trans fluid drip out when the gear is removed. Several drops leaked out but that's all. I cleaned the connector. Haven't driven it yet to see how it works... Anyone had this problem?
